Crystal Springs Resort vs Other New Jersey Resorts

New Jersey has more resort options than most people realize. Between the Skylands region, the Jersey Shore, and the countryside estates near Somerset County, there is a lot to choose from if you want a weekend away without booking a flight. The tricky part is figuring out which resort actually matches what you want out of the trip.

I spent a good chunk of time comparing a handful of the bigger names in the region. Here is how they stack up against each other.

Crystal Springs Resort: The All-in-One Option

Crystal Springs sits in the northwest corner of the state and is really two properties in one, Grand Cascades Lodge and Minerals Hotel. Between the two, you get several golf courses, indoor and outdoor pools, multiple spas, and enough dining options that you never have to leave the property once you check in.

What sets it apart is the sheer range of things to do. Golfers get championship level courses. Families get an indoor water complex with a slide and a hot tub. Couples get a spa day and a nice dinner without driving anywhere else. Not many resorts in the state try to cover that many bases under one roof.

Skytop Lodge: The Rustic Alternative Across the Border

Skytop sits just over the state line in Pennsylvania, close enough that a lot of New Jersey travelers cross-shop it against Crystal Springs. It leans heavily into the old-school lodge feel, with a big lake, hiking trails, and a more traditional dining room experience.

Guest ratings run high, and the price point tends to land a bit above the mid-tier rooms at Crystal Springs. The tradeoff is fewer modern amenities. If you want a quiet, unplugged weekend with fewer families running around, Skytop fits that mood better, but for a livelier pool scene and more activity options for kids, Crystal Springs Resort pulls ahead here.

Great Wolf Lodge: Built Purely for Families

Great Wolf Lodge in the Poconos is the go-to pick if the whole trip revolves around kids. The indoor waterpark is the main event, and pretty much everything else on the property supports that one feature. Rates tend to sit close to the lower end of what you would pay for a standard room at Crystal Springs.

The catch is that Great Wolf really only does one thing well. There is no golf course, no full-service spa, and the dining options are geared toward quick family meals rather than a nice night out. Crystal Springs works better for a mixed group where some people want the pool and others want golf or a spa afternoon.

Mohonk Mountain House: The Historic Splurge

Mohonk is technically in New York, but it comes up constantly when people compare Northeast resorts, so it is worth mentioning. It is a National Historic Landmark with a Victorian castle look, a private lake, and miles of hiking trails. The rates run noticeably higher than Crystal Springs, and the vibe is much more formal and old-world.

This one makes sense for a special occasion or an anniversary trip where atmosphere matters more than modern amenities. For a regular weekend getaway, the price gap is hard to justify unless the history and setting are exactly what you are after.

Pendry Natirar: The New Jersey Luxury Pick

Pendry Natirar in Peapack has picked up national recognition and currently ranks as one of the top hotels in the state. It sits on a large historic estate in Somerset County and leans into a polished, boutique luxury feel rather than the activity-packed layout of Crystal Springs.

It is a great choice if the goal is a refined, low-key weekend with excellent food and spa service. It is not really built for families or golf trips the way Crystal Springs is, and the room rates reflect that more curated experience.

Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort: The Budget-Friendly Golf Option

Shawnee sits along the Delaware River and consistently comes in as one of the more affordable golf resort options in the region. Guest ratings are decent but not spectacular, and the property feels more like a classic golf club than a full resort destination.

If your only priority is cheap greens fees and a place to sleep, Shawnee gets the job done. If you want a broader resort experience with pools, spa access, and dining variety, Crystal Springs offers a lot more for a moderate step up in price.

So Which One Should You Actually Pick

The comparison really comes down to what your group wants out of the trip. A pure golf trip with a tight budget points toward Shawnee. A kids-only waterpark weekend points toward Great Wolf. A quiet, historic splurge points toward Mohonk or Pendry Natirar.

If you want one property that covers golf, a spa day, a real pool complex, and solid dining all at once, Crystal Springs tends to come out ahead simply because it does not force you to pick just one type of trip. That flexibility is probably the biggest reason it keeps showing up at the top of so many New Jersey resort comparisons.

Either way, checking a few different weekend dates before booking is worth the extra ten minutes. Rates at all of these properties move around more than people expect, and a small shift in your travel dates can make a noticeably bigger difference in what you end up paying.
